The Design Process

The Daedalus design is one I am familiar with, especially as this is the third version of the Daedalus I have designed with LEGO^® bricks so it was straightforward to ensure the design was accurate. The scale was more challenging. I was after a size between mini-scale and the large MOC I built with real bricks. Through trial and error I found the best scale was to make the centre section 5 studs wide. However having an odd number of studs had its own challenges and required me to criss-cross the bricks to ensure stability.

This scale still allowed me to add lots of details and not leave anything out, including the bridge, weapons and each individual engine. The end result – a smaller version than the big MOC with lots of detail.

Why didn’t I rebuild the real life version to that scale with instructions? Studio is challenging to use even with a MOC this size, something bigger would have been far more difficult. It would have also had a large parts count that wouldn’t have been practical for most people to obtain at a reasonable cost.
