The Design Process

Thor’s Stormbreaker Axe is one of my biggest LEGO® builds . It is a 1:1 scale replica of Thor’s Axe. The design is fully solid, and it is strong enough to “swoosh”, though it is very heavy! I don’t have a prop replica for the Axe so I estimated the proportions from images online. I started with the handle which is a basic bricks stacked design, with Technic beams through the middle for support, and “SNOT” (Studs not on top) tiles on the side.

The blade is again just bricks stacked, but uses a SNOT design (have a look at the image below) to hold it on the structure. The back of the blade is a solid structure with plates on the outside (it was a challenge to get the shape right!). The plates are in 8 different directions (all on an angle). I achieved this with a lot of hinge plates!

I then used SNOT (again!) to continue the ‘branches’ around the blade at the top. The branches are the one shade of brown on the actual axe, but I chose to add some different shades in to give it more depth and make it seem more realistic.
