The Design Process

The Enterprise-E is another one of my favourite designs from the Star Trek universe. I knew to do it justice, it had to be big, so I started with a large saucer section first. I then worked on the stardrive section and the warp nacelles to match the scale of the saucer section. This is how I achieved a length of over a metre. The stardrive section was structurally stable but it was a challenge to get the right angles and curves, and I had limited pieces at the time. I achieved a shape I was happy with by flipping some pieces upside down and using technic elements to hold them in place. This ensured the bottom of the ship had the right shape.

Next was the warp nacelles and pylons. Luckily the pylons are quite long (something that isn’t the case with most Starfleet ship designs), so it made it easy to put in enough support for the weight of the nacelles. I used grille pieces to get the right effect on the warp nacelles, and SNOT to get the right shape. The biggest challenge here was the front of the warp nacelles – to get the right shape I had to sacrifice using trans red pieces.
